WHAT'S HAPPENING...

Discovery!  Class for new members and those wanting to know more about First Presbyterian Church... new member Sunday... March 21 , 2010.

Stop Hunger Now   The 3 and 4 year old Sunday School Class and their families are invited to participate in a mission activity on March 27. They will be packing food boxes for the Stop Hunger Now Haiti Event to be held at the Holmes Convocation Center on ASU campus. We will meet at 10:00 am at the Holmes Center and will pack boxes until 11:00 am. Afterwards we will head to CiCi’s Pizza for lunch. This is meant to be a family activity so all children will need to stay with their parents. We will be packing as a large group so we can all fellowship together. This is a great way to talk to your child about mission work and helping others. To RSVP or to get more information, please call Christy and John Welch at 266-2043 or cwelch97@yahoo.com.

Stop Hunger Now...

On Saturday, March 27, all of the local Rotary clubs will be hosting a party for Stop Hunger Now (www.stophungernow.org) at the Holmes Convocation Center. Stop Hunger Now is a non-profit organization based out of Raleigh that packages food and sends it to needy countries around the world. This year our event will package meals for Haiti. WE ARE TRYING TO PACKAGE100,000 MEALS IN ONE DAY! It is an ambitious task, so we need everyone in our community to step up. We are asking ASU students, churches, other civic clubs, individuals, families, businesses, and almost anyone else of any age to come and help us pack meals for the needy. I am a member of Boone Rotary Club (so is Frank Dooley) and our club has committed to recruiting 130 people to show up for the 9:00 to 11:00 AM shift. Any help from our FPC would be much appreciated. If you would like to help, please e-mail (or call) me with your name and e-mail address. The deadline is : Monday, March 22 (toneybc@appstate.edu or 828-406-0684). Thanks, Bryan Toney

Passover Seder Celebration   Wednesday, March 31, at 6:00 pm, as part of our Easter and Holy Week activities, we will be observing Passover by celebrating the Seder meal. Dr. Joe Browde will lead us in this very special service again this year. If you have not attended past celebrations, you have missed a very meaningful part of the Holy Week tradition. While this is a traditional Jewish celebration, it is also a Christian festival. The Gospels tell us that it was at a Passover meal that Jesus inaugurated what became known to Christians as the Lord’s Supper, Communion, or Eucharist. Since this is a Christian celebration, we are going to celebrate Passover as Christians, perhaps in a way similar to what Jesus and the disciples might have done. Come be a part of this sacred time of worship.
Volunteers are needed for many small jobs in preparation for the celebration, please consider helping. Reservations are required. If you have questions, or you’d like to make a reservation or sign up to help, contact Linda Werhane at: fpcwerhane@bellsouth.net

Tenebrae is a service of darkness in which the Light of the World is extinguished. Tenebrae, meaning “shadows,” prepares us for the joy of Easter by leading in the experience of walking through the valley of the shadow of death. The service involves hymns, song, personal reflection, Scripture lessons, and a brief meditation.
Please come on the evening of Good Friday, April 2, at 7:00 p.m., walk through the valley and shadow of death, and arise on Easter celebrating glorious victory over death. A nursery will be available.
